Public cloud providers are not new, but their interactions with enterprises are still in the early stages. Not long ago, few public cloud providers picked up the phone. Today, public cloud providers must respond to users. Moreover, as an enterprise that works with a public cloud, you must learn how to effectively communicate with cloud providers, on both sales and operational issues.
Keep in mind: For major IaaS providers — AWS, Google, Microsoft, IBM — cloud support is an emerging science. They are still in learning mode, especially the ones that have built a public cloud, such as IBM and Microsoft.
Once upon a time if you wanted employees to collaborate you’d probably encourage them to use Internet Relay Chat (IRC). But about three years ago Slack appeared on the scene, and since then it’s been eating IRC’s lunch. That’s because it’s much easier to install, get up and running, and use than IRC, making it massively popular with nontechies. And thanks to a well-documented API it’s easy to integrate with other programs and services. That means it’s customizable and infinitely extensible, which makes it popular with developers.

I don’t see shadow IT as that big of deal. Moreover, I believe that CIOs can embrace, rather than fight, the rise of shadow IT for their own benefit. How?
There are three benefits to the CIO from departments’ shadow cloud use.

In a perfect world, Leslie Jones would’ve spent her Monday celebrating the release of her new childhood-ruining movie, Ghostbusters : Attack of the Feminmiminismsists, but instead she’s putting up with some bullshit on Twitter. Monday night, Jones exposed and called out the insanely racist abuse she’s been receiving.
You would be forgiven for assuming that a native cloud company — a company whose raison d’etre is selling cloud applications and platforms — wouldn’t have a lick of on-premises software. But the reality is that for companies founded as recently as 10 to 15 years ago, SaaS analogs for every core computing operation did not exist. For that reason, migrating to SaaS solutions is still very much the mission for Box CIO Paul Chapman.
